OCTOBER, AROUND HERE
October is when fall finally starts to make itself known along the coast.
Not necessarily through cooler temperatures or changing leaves. Around here, it shows up differently. Pumpkins start appearing. Costumes become a serious topic of conversation. Historic streets feel a little more mysterious after dark. And the local calendar fills with the traditions that make October feel like October, even when there’s still a pretty good chance you spent the afternoon at the beach.
Across San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano, the month starts with pumpkins and a little local history. The Outlets Pumpkin Patch returns for the season, while candlelit Ghost Walking Tours wind through Old Town San Juan Capistrano with stories of the people, legends and unexplained happenings that have accumulated over centuries. The Butterfly Festival brings a lighter kind of October tradition to San Juan, celebrating native plants, pollinators and the natural landscape around us. Calendar of Events Oct 2026
Then comes Carnival Colossal. For four days, Vista Hermosa Sports Park fills with rides, games, food and live music, all in support of the beaches, parks and programs that are part of everyday life in San Clemente. Calendar of Events Oct 2026
October 17 offers a particularly good snapshot of life here. In San Clemente, kids can fish a pumpkin out of the pool at Pumpkin Splash or make their own friendly monster planter at the Monster Pot Workshop. Down the coast in Dana Point, the Doheny Woodie Car Show brings beautifully restored Woodies together with surf culture and the kind of California nostalgia that feels especially at home beside the Pacific. And, of course, Halloween gets its turn.
The Ocean Institute becomes Spooky Seas with haunted hayrides, bioluminescent laser tag, costumes and after-dark aquarium adventures. Back in San Clemente, Treat Street brings little ghosts, superheroes, princesses and creatures of every description downtown as businesses along Avenida Del Mar and El Camino Real open their doors to trick-or-treaters. Different traditions. Different towns. Different versions of fall.
But that’s part of what makes October here so good.
Living somewhere long enough means certain things start to mark the season. You know when the pumpkins will arrive. You remember taking your own kids to an event you’re now bringing someone else’s kids to. You recognize the Woodies driving toward Doheny. You know Avenida Del Mar will soon be full of costumes.
The seasons may be subtle along the Southern California coast, but the rituals aren’t.
And sometimes, that’s how you know fall has arrived.
