THE THINGS WE CARRY FORWARD
Two hundred and fifty years is a long time for a place to hold its stories.
This November, Mission San Juan Capistrano marks a milestone anniversary, a reminder of just how much history lives within the communities we call home. The buildings, streets, and gathering places we know today have witnessed generations of change. And while much has evolved, the impulse to come together, celebrate, and make something meaningful of where we live remains remarkably familiar.
It's a fitting beginning to a month that moves between remembrance, creativity, and the first anticipation of the holidays.
November opens with two celebrations that honor the past in very different ways. At Mission San Juan Capistrano, the 250th anniversary brings bell ringing, birthday festivities, and a chance to reflect on the Mission's long and layered history. In Dana Point, DÃa de los Muertos fills La Plaza Park with traditional ofrendas, music, dancing, and art, honoring loved ones through a celebration rooted in memory and cultural tradition.
A few days later, Laguna Beach's Art + Nature celebration offers another way to experience a familiar place. Outdoor installations, interactive works, and a colorful coastal flag walk bring art into the landscape, continuing a creative tradition that has long been part of the city's identity.
Then there's the wonderfully eclectic side of November.
Dogapalooza takes over the Dana Point waterfront with live music, local vendors, and a costume contest for the four-legged members of the family. In San Clemente, the Village Art Faire brings Southern California artists and makers to the library lawns, where handmade ceramics, jewelry, and original artwork offer a welcome alternative to the usual holiday shopping. Later in the month, Casa Romantica's Coffee Concerts pair an intimate acoustic performance with a relaxed morning overlooking the coast.
And somewhere along the way, the holidays begin to arrive.
Dana Point Harbor introduces Harbor After Dark, a new evening market featuring local makers, seasonal food, and festive finds. The familiar glow of Happy Harbor Days and Merry Kiss Me returns to the waterfront, transforming the harbor into a destination for evening outings and family traditions.
By Thanksgiving morning, another familiar ritual takes its place. The Dana Point Turkey Trot brings runners, families, and spectators together for a holiday tradition that has become as much about community as crossing the finish line.
What makes these gatherings meaningful isn't necessarily their size or how long they've been around.
Some are centuries in the making. Others are just beginning. Some we return to every year without much thought, until we realize how many memories we've collected along the way.
That's the interesting thing about local traditions. They become part of our own histories, too.
So here's what's happening around the Coastal Collective this November.
